➝ John Scalzi hosted a recommendation post at Whatever. I love these; I always get interesting new potential reads.

➝ I am now in season four of Doctor who and I'm hooked. As many people on tumblr said STILL NOT OVER IT. NEVER GONNA BE OVER IT. (Spoilers) Also take the time to watch Grover and Cookie Monster doing a musical which features Doctor Who. It's great for the othe other parodies too, especially for The Avengers. Pew! Pew pew!

Sailor Moon trailer that sums up in five minutes why I still think it is one of the best stories of my childhood. (Spoilers) Also relevant are these two graphics.

➝ Ana revealed she had watched Teen Wolf and I HAD FEELINGS. I found this meta collection and this meta collection by episode. Don't worry, Ana! I will find you plenty of meta. :D

➝ I don't like The Newsroom. It's Aaron Sorkin played by Jeff Daniels and I was bored and offended. The format of the whole show seems to be a soapbox for Sorkin to stand on to comment on a past political landscape. There's other criticism about the show I missed, as I only made it through the first episode (and barely). I think it's time for a rewatch of The West Wing. But regardless, I found this scene compelling (until the end when it falls apart because even rich white dudes are afraid to call these people what they are, which is terrorists), because I work with some self-proclaimed members of the Tea Party and they're fucking terrifying. One of the quotes in this video about the gene pool? I heard exactly the same thing while in the breakroom one day, as I was sitting next to a bunch of workers who hated Obama. It wasn't hate for his policies, his position, or his politics. I never heard those come up. What I heard was personal and scary (he's black, he's an elitist, he's not an American because he wasn't born here blah blah blah). Seriously, friends don't let friends become members of the Tea Party.

Romney vs. Obama: The Secret Tapes by Jay Smooth. ♥

Neil deGrasse Tyson on Scientific Literacy, Education, and the Poetry of the Cosmos, interviewed by Stephen Colbert (not in character). So fascinating. The video is an hour long and the sound quality is iffy (I had to watch in pieces because of the buzzing), but I think its worth it.

➝ I read Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld and really liked it. But what I want to know is, can I get this art on my copy. Damn, Japan, you're putting us to shame. Damn.

Rachel Manija Brown and Sherwood Smith's book from last year's Yes Gay YA discussion has sold. It's titled Stranger and will be out in late 2014. Needless to say, I'm excited! So glad they had a happy resolution and now I get to read that book...eventually.

➝ I'm probably the last person in the world to see this video of a seagull stealing someone's camera and flying it at an angle into a sunset and over water. Gorgeous and funny. When I first watched, one of the upvoted comments was a version of "the bird just did this to stage a moment for him to fly into the sunset" which tickled me longer than it should have, but oh well. :D

The Wizard of Oz in China. I would totally love to see this rendered fully. *___*

➝ Hello, tailor (whose blog I am now obsessed with) talks a bit about 'The Bletchley Circle', a recent three part drama about female code breakers who served at Bletchley in WWII and thrust themselves into the search for a serial killer years later. You know that program I'm always saying I want - the one where a group of ladies are friends and fight crime together? This was that program! I have to agree with 'Asking the Wrong Question's assessment of all the characters as 'types', but it seems like this might just be a three part pilot so hopefully there'll be plenty of room for character development if it gets developed into a longer project.

➝ Sarah Rees Brennan lists about some real life lady sleuths.

➝ Here's a very useful article called 'The Distress of the Privileged' walks readers through the difference in scale of distress caused to privileged people by push back against their views and the pain caused to less privileged people who are oppressed by opposing views. It's a lot more readable that I'm making it sound and explains its points using references to 'Pleasantville', Bristol Palin and Chick-fil-A.

One of the commenters raises a good point about this part of the essay:

'Confronting this distress is tricky, because neither acceptance nor rejection is quite right. The distress is usually very real, so rejecting it outright just marks you as closed-minded and unsympathetic. It never works to ask others for empathy without offering it back to them.'

which tries to decide how to talk to privileged people about the lower importance of their distress.

'I think that’s the space where allies matter most. Allies can afford to be pleasantly patient with those who share their privilege because the privilege isn’t harming them...' - ophelia24

➝ I'm a huge Sherlock Holmes dork who thinks that a pilgrimage to the Reichenbach Falls sounds like fun and not creepy at all.

➝ As a straight lady who thinks marriage equality the whole world over would be...well it would just be right, but who doesn't want to get married herself (and knows that I'm super lucky to be able to make a choice about that rather than other people's choices thrust upon me) I loved 'On Marriage' by Justine Larbalestier. She manages to acknowledged the weird culture that surrounds marriage, while saying she personally loves being married and wants everyone else to be able to get married. Sorry, I told you I'd be linking to her blog a lot now that it's active again.

I think it's time for a rewatch of The West Wing.

I think what you mean is that it's time to watch Borgen....

I would understand exactly nothing. I barely understood half the stuff happening in The West Wing because I wasn't in it specifically for the politics (since I find politics a bit boring).

Unless we tried to watch it together and explained things to each other along the way? If it didn't work after a few episodes, no harm done :P #TVStalker

Wheee, Teen Wolf meta. Thank you so much :D

Also, this reminds me that we never reviewed Leviathan. Maybe we should read book two together at some point and then try to write about both? #nopressure

Yes! I think that would be a great idea. Jodie will be happy. ;)
