It's Hugo season once again, and we've gathered to talk about some of our favorite media from 2019 that's eligible for the Hugo Awards. We've very excited about all the great stuff that was made last year. Although it's too late to join as a member to nominate, if you can nominate, we highly recommend checking out some of our suggestions! For categories we don't have recommendations in yet (there's still a few weeks left to nominate), please check out the crowdsourced Hugo Awards Rec spreadsheet, full of excellent stuff collected by members of fandom over the last year.

The Hugo Awards will be presented at CoNZealand later this year. You can vote once the nominees are out by getting a membership to the con—either attending, if you'll be heading to New Zealand, or Supporting, if you can't make it this time. If you want to be prepared to nominate media released in 2020, you can become a Supporting member of DisCon III, the 2020 Worldcon in Washington, D.C.

On a personal note: while we've already seen some folks list us on their potential ballots, this year Lady Business will be recused from consideration in the Fanzine category and will turn down any nominations. We won last year! THAT'S STILL UNREAL! WHAT?! Thanks, from the very bottom of our hearts! We appreciate your support, but want to encourage everyone to check out the Hugo Awards Rec spreadsheet for other Fanzines. There's tons of great fans out there doing awesome work and we really want everyone to see the scope of what fans are making.

And now: on to the recs! Read more... )

Real talk: by the end of the year, I did not think I would meet any of my 2019 reading goals. But weirdly, it turns out that even the goals I didn't reach still taught me useful things, which I think is how this "setting goals" thing is supposed to work?

Anyway, as is tradition: looking back on my goals of 2019!

So I spent most of 2019 coming to the realisation that I am not good at setting realistic goals. I know, I know, you're all shocked by this revelation, but I've finally accepted the truth! Which means that for 2020, I have dialed my goals down about as far as I can go and still feel challenged.

So that's what I'll be up to this year! How about you? Have you set any reading goals? Have you joined the goal-free anarchy some of the Lady Business editors are embracing? Did your goals bring up any revelations about your reading habits? ... Definitely comment if you had that last one, I would love to not be alone in this!
