It's December: the end of the year and the time of 1000 recommendation lists. We thought we'd get in on the action with some sweet themed recs! Here's a few of our over-the-top favorites.
I just watched Dramaworld on Netflix, which is intentionally campy as it is a parody of K-drama, a genre I don’t watch but obviously need to. An adorable K-drama fan named Claire gets sucked into Dramaworld, where she must ensure that the stars of her favorite show get a happy ending. If she fails, Dramaworld—and all K-drama—ceases to be. There are ten episodes of this show, fifteen minutes each, so you can burn right through them.
Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home A.K.A. the one with the whales. This one of my favorite pieces of Trek media of all time! I rewatched it earlier this year at its still wonderful. Is this movie very silly? Yes, that's part of its charm. The crew of the Enterprise travel back in time with trippy time travel sequence to 1980s San Francisco where they hope to find humpback whales to bring into the future with them. Meanwhile, they are befuddled by such things as money, boomboxes, and asking for directions. Spock wears a ridiculous headband to cover his pointy ears. The movie also features awesome marine biologist Dr. Gillian Taylor who is far more interested in whales than she is in Kirk. I love it!
The Lost Boys is the 80s American-gothic vampire flick you never knew you needed! There's big hair, big costumes, and a big mood scene where an oiled up muscular man plays the saxophone in the middle of a chaotic bonfire party. It's the epic, and completely over the top, story of two brothers who discover a nest of street-rat vampires living in the heart of Santa Monica, and have to destroy them when they threaten their family. Kiefer Sutherland plays David; the motorcycle racing, leather jacket wearing, bleach blonde leader of the vampire crew, and he just throws everything at the screen in each shot. It's very, very 80s goth in the best possible way, with an energetic soundtrack that goes all over the mood map.
