Reasons I ended up behind on Agents of SHIELD:

1. Out of nowhere romance in 3x05 using every trope I dislike.
2. I am Too Busy with Too Many Projects.
3. After 3x04, [twitter.com profile] echthroi put forth a theory about Lash with multiple types of evidence that I could not figure out how to refute. It made too much sense. I was, frankly, worried about him being right and hiding from the possibility.

Turns out he was right. So the truth is, the show is good but I really didn't want them to go there, even if it was good drama and it turns out okay in the end. So I took a small hiatus. "But Renay!" I said. "You love Daisy and Bobbi and Melinda and you know they'll save the day!" So back I go, into the Agents of SHIELD fray.

This episode had a lot going on. It was like field trip day for SHIELD. Coulson's off with Rosalind, Melinda and Bobbi are on the "Kill Ward Dead" adventure, Werner, Ward's pet project, is running scared after failing a mission, and Daisy and Mack have suspicions about who Lash is. Their suspicion sends them on a day-long trip stalking Banks; he's an ATCU member who they don't like much (I'm sure the feeling is mutual). Plus, everyone's super pissed at Lance, which is, not going to lie, pretty good for me.

In my shipper brain, I pretended this entire episode was Phil and Rosalind on a date. I can't figure out if her house was really broken into or if she was distracting Phil in order to clear out problematic things in the facility. I'm never getting over how great their banter is, even when they're disagreeing or irked at each other. This is like frenemies which I usually don't ship, but here I am weak! I hope they eventually go a real date with less containers full of bodies encased in goo.

The work the ATCU is doing now becomes clear—they want to offer people changed by the terrigen hope for the future by taking them off the board completely. As long as it's voluntary I am, in theory, okay with this. But it's not clear in this episode how the process works. And I'm not convinced they're not up to other shady business on the side. I'm with Daisy that Banks seems suspicious and shifty and there's more to the ATCU that we're seeing from their sterile tour for Coulson. What's with all the empty shelves in your ultra secret warehouse!? I'M SUSPICIOUS, ATCU (I'm also sure all my questions get answered in an episode that has since aired, ha ha).

Daisy is convinced that Banks, being so suspicious, has to be Lash. Lash knows too much and can change his form, and the obvious answer to her is that he's a member of the ATCU. And Daisy and Banks have no love lost between them. This field trip between Daisy, Mack, and in-the-doghouse Lance was really adorable. Mack is the most well-adjusted of all three of them. Lance needs so much therapy for his anger issues. And everyone gives him a hard time, repeatedly, over those anger issues, from May to Coulson to Bobbi. Ah, it's so refreshing for a white dude to be a screw up and everyone to be, "You fucked up!" The field trip overlaps with Coulson's when they subdue Banks, test his blood, and use his phone to head to the ATCU facility.

Daisy, who is totally me, steals one of Fitz's DWARFs that can turn invisible, and flies it in to learn the terrible truth about what the ATCU is doing to people (with no sound, so she's missing some context with the rest of us about whether people are there voluntarily). Rosalind tells Coulson they're saving people until they find a cure! And they're very close to finding a cure! Daisy, angry and horrified, misses this. I suspect there will be serious shenanigans over Coulson's goals with the ATCU and Daisy's after this, given that Daisy is already suspicious over how Coulson is acting toward Rosalind. Daisy and I do not share this ship at all.

So as soon as I realized the details about the ATCU's work, the writing was on the wall and Zach's theory was all but confirmed. I was so mad about this, friends, because it's actually really good plotting! But I don't want any more men on this show, especially the black men, to become murderous monsters! Now I'm hopeful that the cure angle is going to be the next they explore as Melinda gets the true story of what happened in that store out of a dying Werner (sorry, dude). Andrew is Lash! Lash is Andrew! Without knowing it, Ward actually succeeded in screwing up SHIELD's day.

I'm curious, though, about Werner. Did Ward deliberately use him to lure out a bigger fish? Because I'm not sure who Old Evil Hydra dude is (did he have a name? I don't remember!) but Ward seemed to know that he was a big deal. I also love that Ward is no longer into redemption, like, "lol thanks but no thanks, I'm good." I approve of him embracing his bad guy status. Unfortunately in this episode he loses Werner and Kebo, as Bobbi takes Kebo's condescending sexist beatdown and spins it into a sweet death-by-electrified-pool.

Bobbi and May teaming up this episode was great, too. I am 100% down for more adventures between them taking down unsuspecting dudes. I like that Bobbi is back in the field, period, because I missed her out there. I perhaps have a small crush on Adrianne Palicki beating dudes down with her electric sticks, being a super fashionable spy, jumping rope, or standing...looking...nice.

Anyway, I'm back on the Agents of SHIELD boat, I GUESS. I know a few spoilers for the next four episodes but I'm trying to avoid the rest...AVOIDING HEARTBREAK?

More thoughts:
  • Jemma was adorable while playing therapist with Andrew. I love you, Jemma.

  • Fitz looking into Will is heartbreaking. I'm curious if he's going to discover some dark secret in Will's past that will change things when he and Jemma recover him from the planet.

  • Dear Rosalind: why did you throw the food away? SOMEONE COULD HAVE EATEN IT. THINK OF THE STARVING PEOPLE.

  • At the end of the episode, when Daisy and Lincoln were on the phone, they were super cute. I liked this interaction way more than the weird, inappropriate kissing while being tracked by the government. It was so nice! I guess I may come around on this ship (although I am kind of disappointed they hooked Daisy and Jemma up with dudes instead of exploring how cute they'd be together. SIGH!).

  • Rosalind wants Phil to like her! JUST DATE ALREADY.
