We Want It! - October 23, 2015

Because we haven't quite managed to work out a way for us to consume ALL the entertainment yet: to keep us from emerging haggard and zombie like after regular all night box set marathons, book splurges and music overload we've set up this quarterly space where we can express our pure fannish glee at the fact that so many projects of awesome potential are continually being made. All of our past wants and desires can be found in the We Want It! tag.

Film

Momentum — Who didn’t tell me Olga Kurylenko is the lead in a spy thriller? This just came out in the US and I WANT IT. She was brilliant in Quantum of Solace, the Craig Bond film nobody talks about, and I’m heartened to see what appears to be a pretty mid-level spy thriller with a lady headliner. Go, movie, go! Be this year’s Lucy, but only in box office numbers!

Film

Crimson Peak — Let me kick off with two pieces of media starring Tom Hiddleston. First, Crimson Peak, which looks like a creepy slice of gothic indulgence (yum). While this film hasn't received the best mainstream reviews, it got both cleolinda and Hello_Tailor pretty excited. Mainstream media claimed Mr Turner was a genuinely good film. I know whose opinions I value the most.

Television

The Night Manager — I think The Night Manager is Hiddleston's first UK TV project since Thor propelled him to international stardom. It sounds like a stylish thriller and I'm excited to see that it also features the amazing Olivia Coleman (America, Olivia Coleman really deserves a film—get on this).

Cuffs — Ashley Walters is in a new police drama with Amanda Abbington and it sounds very promising. Not many details have been released yet but I'm looking forward to this project (Ashley Walters!).

The Librarians (Series Two) — I just finished cramming Series One of The Librarians into my eyes and am eager for Series Two to begin, like, immediately. The show is kind of hokey and old-fashioned in some ways (think of Buffy the Vampire Slayer's early effects) but it's also surprising (Jenkins' past romantic relationship with Dulaque, and the unconventional-for-TV pace of the romance between Eve and Flynn were favourites flash points of mine), adorable and fun. I don't think I'll ever be over Christian Kane's performance as a small town oil rig man with a love of art and deep trust issues. *swoon*

Catastrophe (Series Two) — I always feel like I have to warn people that UK comedy gets really creepy in places - our critically regarded shows generally have issues I don't think would even be allowed in the most tasteless of US comedy—and Catastrophe is no exception to that rule. With that in mind, the first series of Catastrophe was one of the biggest surprises of this year's UK comedy scene. It was a sweet and dirty take on a story similar to Knocked Up, and it also dealt with culture clash, friendships, and the issues faced by older parents. Sharon Hogan is always gold and I really enjoyed Rob Delaney's performance. I'm curious to see how the program is going to evolve once the couple have their baby.

Detectorists (Series Two) — The first series of this lovely, quiet comedy about two men with a super nerdy hobby was delightful and I can't wait to see more of it. Fun fact—Rachel Stirling from The Bletchley Circle plays Becky, and she gives a wonderful natural performance which suits the the tone of the show down to the ground.

Ghost Talkers by Mary Robinette Kowal — I am going to be entirely shallow and admit that I mainly want this because I really love that cover (The colours! The characters!), although I absolutely love the practicalities of having mediums in the army collecting information from dead soldiers. I am still concerned about the fiancé's chances of surviving the book, despite the author trying to reassure me on twitter. Please don't spoil it for me!

Monstress by Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda — A woman-centric story about giant monsters, rebuilding your life after war, and becoming a monster? Hi, my name's Susan, I had an order in for this series within about five minutes of discovering it because that is what I am here for.

Games

Final Fantasy Type-0 (WARNING: trailer contains a lot of violence and kids being killed) — This came out on Steam in August, which means that it's actually in a format that I can play! From what I can see, it looks like it's got the party make-up and school structure of Final Fantasy VIII and the narrative voice of Final Fantasy XII, and my body is ready.

That trailer also has a trailer for Final Fantasy XV and... Ugh. I'm probably going to play it eventually because Final Fantasy is where I live and it looks gorgeous, but at the moment I'm still in the slightly bitter stage of "If I want four dudes on a Magical Homoerotic Road Trip of Murder, I can just go and reread Saiyuki!" ... Maybe it will be good? I really, really want it to be good!

Life is Strange — This was recommended to me by someone at my old job who used key phrases like "murder mystery", "time travel", "high school girls trying to solve crime", "Squeenix" and "potential for non-tragic lesbians!" while I flailed my hands around going "You have used the magic words! All of the magic words!" The trailer actually manages to make it look less interesting, because the phrase "far-reaching consequences" NEVER means anything good for me and my play-style. But I have a Tragedy Looper craving, so I will put up with a lot to satisfy it

Persona 5 — I am just going to link you to all of the trailers, because I am weak and they all look so gorgeous. It's got MAGICAL THIEVES and SHOOTING PEOPLE'S MENTAL PROBLEMS IN THE FACE and a really gorgeous aesthetic—everything about the way the characters move and the limited colour palette and the animated sections and the jumping into paintings is just so stylish to me. I am really really ready for this to have a release date. (Or for the trailer with the plot information to have subtitles that I can find - can anyone help a girl out?)

Jodie: did you ever watch Leverage? It was a five-season show about a team of Robin Hood-type con artists, made by much of the same creative team as The Librarians, and Christian Kane plays a character who hits a lot of the same notes. From what you say here, I think you might like it.

CRIMSON PEAK CRIMSON PEAK. It was exactly what I wanted it to be. Everything about it, but particularly Jessica Chastain, was exactly what I wanted it to be.

I'm glad to hear about The Night Manager as well -- I maybe vaguely remember hearing about it a while ago but then I forgot about it? I am excited for all the actors who are in that.

Late reply, but where are you getting "Jenkins' past romantic relationship with Dulaque" from? because they're (spoilers for Apple of Discord) Lancelot and (spoilers for Loom of Fate) Galahad, so I find it very very unlikely that's what's happening here.

Unless I misremember, those scenes only tell us they have a history. Given that they're Lancelot and Galahad, it's way likelier they're father and son, since that's what their relationship is, in Arthurian (unless this is one of those differences between the Arthuriana I grew up with and the Arthuriana of the English speaking world, which is always possible).
