It’s competition time!

We’re very excited about Phoebe North’s debut novel Starglass which was released in July.

On the book cover for Starglass a girl in a belted coat and black leggings stands with her back to the reader, her hair pulled backwards by the wind - she is looking out of a window towards stars and a purple planet

‘Terra has never known anything but life aboard the Asherah, a city-within-a-spaceship that left Earth five hundred years ago in search of refuge. At sixteen, working a job that doesn't interest her, and living with a grieving father who only notices her when he's yelling, Terra is sure that there has to be more to life than what she's got.

But when she inadvertently witnesses the captain's guard murdering an innocent man, Terra is suddenly thrust into the dark world beneath her ship's idyllic surface. As she's drawn into a secret rebellion determined to restore power to the people, Terra discovers that her choices may determine life or death for the people she cares most about. With mere months to go before landing on the long-promised planet, Terra has to make the decision of a lifetime--one that will determine the fate of her people.’

And we would like at least one more person to have this exciting new novel in their hands. So, we propose a challenge, pitting reader against reader, an ordeal…

No, alright, that’s going a bit far. We promise this will be easier than competing in The Hunger Games.

We have one shiny copy of Phoebe’s novel to give away. To enter just comment and tell us which debut SFF novel that has been written by a woman and published in 2013 you think sounds most exciting. There are no extra points for saying Starglass but I don’t expect anyone would grumble if you used it as your answer.

This contest runs from 19th – 25th August (ending midnight GMT).

The female-authored SFFna debut I've most been looking forward to is Ascension by Jacqueline Koyanagi, which I've just started reading. SO AWESOME. Would love to give Starglass a crack too, though!

This is hard choice -- I read and loved A Stranger in Olondria by Sofia Samatar. Also I'm excited by Ascension by Jacqueline Koyanagi. (And Starglass -- because Jews in Space!) Looking forward to seeing what other people recommend.

Gosh, hard question! Starglass sounds amazing! I'm also looking forward to Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea by April Genevieve Tucholke, because, um, the devil. And of course Ascension as the other commenters have mentioned! But it's tough for me to really look forward to books when I'm not already familiar with the author's work, because I just can't tell if I'll like it. These books all sound really exciting, though!
