At the end of every week, we gather at Lady Business HQ to share media thoughts and chat about the recent happenings in our tiny spheres of human experience. Puns welcome.

In theory, eventually this feature will have a name once we all agree on one. In the meantime, to open the festivities, a gif to sum up 2016 so far:

This week, I started my Hugo reading in earnest. I finished everything I needed to read in the novella category, and am almost done with novelette. Once that's finished (the Stephen King story, which I'm looking forward to -- I've always liked King but haven't really kept up with him in recent years), I can tackle Seveneves.

We also started playing Lego Marvel Superheroes on the PS4, which is exactly the bit of silly fun that I was hoping for (and needed a bit of right now).

I keep looking at Seveneves and going "BUT IT'S SO LONG AND IT'S BY A DUDE." Uggggh, I dunno. I could really use the time spent on those 8000000 pages elsewhere but I have so little Hugo reading to do this year I feel like I should at least make the effort.

*jealous grumbling about your PS4*

I haven't done any Hugo reading at all so far, and I'm not sure that I'm going to at this point. I mean I have better things to read in my limited reading time, and I'm just not feeling it.

I bought The fifth season when it came out but I haven't read it because I just haven't felt emotional strong enough. Also I hear it has kid death and I just can't with the fictional kid harm right now. (On the other hand I started reading A Midwife's Tale which is a history book about a Midwife in early America, and all the death isn't bothering me, even though tons of kids died of scarlet fever in the 1st chapter. Go figure.) Anyways not reading the 5th season is putting a mental block on of some type on the rest of my Hugo reading.

You might need to avoid the whole series until you have more distance? The Fifth Season and The Obelisk Gate both deal with dying kids (well...dying everyone, but kids are included). There's no harm in waiting until you're in a better place!

I can understand all that. I do recommend Penric's Demon by Bujold, if you haven't already read it, and especially if you've read any of the books in the Land of Five Gods series (Curse of Chalion etc).

Do you think you're gonna end up talking about your Hugo reading on your journal/Lady Business? I have it in my head you said that you were gonna try to give everything a fair chance to fail on their own merits rather than the slates' (I... May have misremembered that, please correct me if I'm wrong!), so I'd be interested in hearing how that's shaking out for you! Especially because Seveneves looks big enough to kill a man with. :(

On my journal, most likely. It sounds like there's a critical mass of people wanting my report on Seveneves, at the very least. :) (FWIW I know that [personal profile] justira has read this book and really liked it.)

Not exactly, but along those lines. A work/creator's slating status will bear on my decision of whether to read/consider it, but it's not the only thing I'll look at. So, for example, I read all the novellas but will probably give some categories a pass, or a near-pass. But yeah, I'll probably save in-depth discussion of what I read, and how I felt about it, for a journal entry soon.

That sounds reasonable! And definitely count me in that mass. :D (Ah, thank you! I had it in my head that [personal profile] justira read it but I couldn't remember for the life of me if they liked it or not.)

Ah, that's it! I knew I didn't have it right but couldn't remember what it was, thank you for explaining. I'll keep an eye out for the post! :D
