Clare & Renay's Adventures in: Xena

In a time without a Black Widow movie on the horizon, two fans in turmoil cried out for a heroine. She was Xena, a mighty female protagonist forged in the fires of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. The action, the camp, the queer subtext. Her adventures will rock their worlds.

Clare: I’m moving the Femslash Alert to the very top of this discussion because I’d explode if we waited until the end to wail on it like the Enterprise in contested space. Because this episode? Did I say that "The Greater Good" was a hurt/comfort fic? I was lying, because "Is There a Doctor in the House?" is. THEY MADE OUT, FRIENDS AND COUNTRYWOMEN! If inventing CPR to save your dead girlfriend counts as making out, which totally does.

Renay: No, "The Greater Good" was hurt/comfort fic and this episode is the sequel that everyone demanded from the author after loving that episode. I'm glad to know after the disappointments of the last episodes, the writer are back on point delivering us amazing femslashy goodness. I forgive them for saving it all up for this episode so we could both be OVERJOYED. I squealed at my iPad, no joke. Read more... )

Clare: Gabrielle has really come into her own, hasn’t she? I mean, we’ve been watching Gabrielle develop her fighting skills over the last twenty-two episodes, but this is the first time, I think, that we really see her confidently charge into battle alongside Xena. I mean, we’ve seen her waste dudes because Xena was (temporally) dead, but this is different. This is new. And I really like it. Read more... )

Xena: Episode 122, "Callisto"

Clare: Renay, do you think Xena and Gabrielle finally made out between this episode and the last? You know, in the throes of "I'm so happy you’re not dead"? Because their dynamic in this episode is so much more affectionate and emotionally honest. I am loving it.

Renay: If this coda doesn't exist by another fan writer, it's a horrible oversight and I should write it, right? It can open with Xena being impressed by Gabrielle and Argo's closer relationship and then devolve into feelings from there. Y/YYY? Read more... )

Clare: Obviously, Xena is a femslasher’s paradise: we’ve been thrilling to hints and innuendo since we began this project. But "The Greater Good" is the first episode where the word "love" is used, if only obliquely. Apparently, according to Renee O’Connor in an interview with the now defunct Dreamwatch, this was the episode where the writers discovered that Xena and Gabrielle’s relationship was exceedingly fertile ground.

And we’ve all benefited from that.Read more... )

Clare: "Altared States" opens with perhaps the greatest opener we’ve seen so far: we go from gay subtext (a naked Xena to a naked Gabrielle, bathing in a pool: "Come on, you’ve been wanting to try this for ages!") to Xena emerging from said pool to punch a man in the face to Xena, now in her underdress, beating the living daylights out of five or more men with a string of three fish.

And Xena is cackling with glee the entire time. My queen. Read more... )

Clare: After Gaby freezes during an ambush, she decides that she’s too much of a liability (the ever-present danger for an action heroine’s girlfriend) for Xena and decides to go home to talk things over with her sister. Xena demolished my heart with her tentative little wave goodbye to Gaby. NO, GABY, NO! Read more... )

Clare: First things first: XENA’S HAIR. It is no secret that I am madly in love with Xena (like Gabrielle), but something about getting rid of that headband braid and roughing her hair up a little makes her look like a mighty, avenging lion. Gosh, she’s just so intimidating and powerful <3 <3 <3 Read more... )

Clare: MARCUS! This episode was mostly fascinating to me because it walks a fine line between a explicit straight relationship and an implicit queer relationship. While Gabrielle doesn’t have much to do in contrast to the A plot, it kind of speaks volumes that she waits for Xena. I mean, we’ve seen Gabrielle wait for Xena before, but she usually has stuff of her own to do while waiting or we just don’t see her (as in the previous episode, "Warrior... Princess".) We have not gotten shots of Gabrielle longingly waiting for Xena to come back from the war from the dead yet. Really devoted waiting is a very wifely thing in Greek literature. I’m not sure if this is intentional—the Xena writers have a shall we say loose interpretation of what counts as Greek mythology—but it makes my heart happy. I mean, when Xena comes back, Gabrielle shyly tells her that seeing her after getting knocked out was "a pleasant sight." Read more... )

Renay: This episode tosses us right into some weird action, as Xena approaches a castle and everyone immediately starts deferring to her. This is followed quickly by a assassination attempt, and honestly, my first reaction was "omg Xena you JUST GOT HERE, how can you already have made enemies mad enough to KILL YOU???" Since I hadn't read the episode blurb, walking in cold turned out to be supremely weird. Did you know we'd be getting amazing 90s green screen adventures? Read more... )
