Now I want to warn you that memory loss is a huge part of We Were Liars (this isn't a spoiler; you find out that there are things the narrator doesn't remember in the first few chapters). I read the book twice in the last couple of days (a first for me), and I'm still trying to decide if it does cross that line separating literary technique from the messiness of real life. I need to sort through my complicated and fast-shifting feelings about it, but the one thing I know for now is that it's kind of a shame that the secret/twist will dominate the conversation. There are far more interesting things about this book, and I worry they'll get kind of drowned as people talk about how soon they guessed/didn't guess/OMG it's so obvious anyone who doesn't guess must be stupid/they could never have guessed/etc. (frustrated comment brought to you by a perusal of GoodReads reviews).
