Date: 2011-03-22 07:55 am (UTC)About The Virgin Suicides, I honestly don't agree that it fits the trope (though feel free to argue of course!). I'm not saying this because I love it, as I also love many stories that DO, but I think it's a different sort of novel because it actually makes idealisation/objectification/how much you don't actually KNOW someone you admire from the outside one of its main themes. The closing paragraphs of the book say it all really (and I'd type them up, but my copy is back home).
