The self-styled bastard boyfriend love interest in "His Favorite" (whom everyone else thinks is a too-good-to-be-true prince type) mellows quickly enough that I think it only takes another two or three volumes, if that, for him to stop actively setting up the unfortunate plain-looking protagonist to be hated by every girl in the school and blamed for their inability to get anywhere with the irresistibly rich and handsome Bastard Boyfriend. BB never actually gets around to doing anything non-consensually sexual to Plain-Looking Protagonist, either, despite a few hints of dishonorable intentions early on. So even at its most questionable this series is a bit less queasiness-inducing than, say, the what-started-out-as-dubcon-turns-into-a-genuine-romance-between-a-playboy-and-a-nerd initial volumes of the more R-rated (and ultimately more fully developed character-wise) "Don't Be Cruel." The comedy in "His Favorite" comes mostly from the supporting characters, such as P-LP's two buddies (the dumpier of whom unexpectedly turns out to be not-quite-dating his female childhood friend, who's not only nice but one of the prettiest girls at a neighboring school) and the impossibly noble, handsome, and altruistic guy who actually is just as much of a prince as everyone thinks BB is, but keeps getting sidetracked from his efforts to court P-LP by having to help little old ladies cross the street, etc. (By the time he gets a few rescue-free moments to make his case, P-LP has already realized that he's developed romantic feelings toward BB [who's also started feeling and acting more genuinely lovey-dovey toward his former target]. So P-LP turns him down fairly tactfully and the two of them become platonic friends.) At some point BB and P-LP even go public as boyfriends (I forget whether this is deliberate or they're accidentally outed somehow), and BB manages to charm the previously P-LP-hating girls into deciding that this is at least better than losing BB to a rival girl. So they grudgingly start supporting the new BL couple, at least to the extent of protecting them from encroaching girls from other schools (much like the girls in the non-BL series "Handa-kun," who are all crazy about the obliviously insecure title character, and draw straws to see who will get to take photos of the handsome Handa during the class trip to Kyoto while the rest of the girls make sure no female students from other schools get anywhere near him). Basically, I'm saying that if you can get "His Favorite" from the library, it might be worth skipping ahead a couple of volumes (there are ten of them out so far) and seeing if you like it any better once the characters have evolved a bit.
