Eight Book Minimum: Revisiting Goals!
Hey everyone! It's that time of year, where I look at how much I've read and see whether I'm on track for my reading goals! As always, thanks to
readingtheend for encouraging revisiting goals on the regular, and I'm going to be going off the actual numbers I have behind the scenes, rather than the current post numbers!
Read 200 stories, of which 100 must be prose: 111/200, of which 27/100 are prose and 16 of those are short stories.
I'm... Actually just about on track! I wasn't expecting that! I've been in a bit of a reading slump since the end of April (I read... One book since then...), so I honestly thought that I'd be horribly behind and unable to meet this goal! I'm only on 27 prose stories though, which means that I'm going to need to either prioritise my reading differently, or reduce my goal.
#ReadMyOwnDamnBooks: 52/100
... This is another one that genuinely surprised me, because I hadn't realised that I had read so many books that I already owned! I guess that's because most of them have been ebooks, so I don't have that visual cue of my physical TBR piles going down?
Read 12 non-fiction books: 5/12
I'm not doing too badly! A little behind, but still better than I did last year. It's been more mental health books than I expected, but I'm looking forward to digging into the stacks of history and memoirs I have.
#UnofficialQueerAFBookClub: 36/75
Another one where I'm behind, but not irrevocably so, and I'm pretty sure this is still better than it was last year! I have a stack of queer mysteries next to my bed, so it might be time to get stuck into those.
As for my book blanket... Well, the less said about that the better. My current plan is to invest in audiobooks so that I can catch up on my books and my knitting at the same time, but we'll see how that goes.
I'm... Shocked that I'm mostly on track, to be honest, because if you'd asked me I would have said that I was completely behind with no hope of catching up. But it looks like if I just rebalance my reading to favour prose (and maybe actually dig into the Hugo packet like I've been meaning to), I should be able to meet my goals! I'm confused and don't know what's going on.
And as is tradition: things that I'm excited to read in the latter part of the year!

Prairie Fires by Caroline Fraser — I saw a livetweet of Prairie Fires going around back when it first came out, and it sounded WILD. Not just in an "Upsetting the mythology of Laura Ingalls Wilder" way, but in a "If all of this is true, this is DRAMATIC."
Her Body and Other Parties by Carmen Maria Machado — I've really liked what I read of Carmen Maria Machado's short fiction, so of course I'm invested in her short story collection!
How Long 'Til Black Future Month by N. K. Jemisin — I'm pretty sure I've read some of the stories in this collection, but new N. K. Jemisin, I definitely need it!
Stormsong by C. L. Polk — Witchmark gave me an emotional hangover when I was done with it, so I'm VERY hype for the sequel.
Magic For Liars by Sarah Gailey — It's a fantasy story about a private investigator who has no magic in a magical world! This sounds like the most my thing!
