I have seen Sleuth, and yes that character is great!

There's a lot of Tang Dynasty art of women wearing men's clothing, and some poems complaining about it. I don't think I have any references that focus on the crossdressing but it came up several times in my textile reading. (The Tang Dynasty had many gender deifying powerful and interesting women -- who are pretty understudied)
