Short Unique Fic: A Mulit-Fandom Rec List

While long fics are often deeply immersive, the best short fics pack a punch. These fics are often commentary on the source material, highlighting injustices, or expanding on worldbuilding. This is also a great length for a character study.

The affordances of AO3 make long multi chapter fic easiest to find, but shorter pieces have a lot to offer. Short work is often where writers play around with format, themes, worldbuilding and characterization. Stories like these can be overlooked, so I want to highlight some of my favorites.

For this list, I'm recommending fic less than five thousand words that's unique in some way. Maybe it has an unusual format, maybe it focuses on minor characters, or has usual themes. I wanted to showcase fic that doesn't fit into most common types of stories told in fanfic. Some of these are from big fandoms and some are from small fandoms.
