It's December: the end of the year and the time of 1000 recommendation lists. We thought we'd get in on the action with some sweet themed recs! There's love, and then there's love-love, and that's this list.
If I say Black Sails again will I get banned from Recmas? NO NO ONLY JOKING, okay, a piece of media that makes me very happy is Jane the Virgin. I picked it back up this month, and I am reminded again of what a funny, charming, heartfelt show it is (even if Gina Rodriguez needs to check her anti-blackness). Among other things, it has a narrator better than the Arrested Development one, three generations of fierce, supportive women, and this character Rogelio who is perfect in every way. I love it. (Though not as much as I love Black Sails.)
Giant Days!!! <3 I adore these comics about three housemates—Susan, Esther, and Daisy—trying to navigate university life. They're so funny, and sweet, and the relationships between the girls are lovely. I'm a huge fan of cynical, hardworking Susan, but I love all three of them for different reasons. And it's been great to watch Daisy's deep, but difficult romance, with Ingrid, aka the worst houseguest ever, unfold over the course of the last few volumes. I always mean to wait a while before reading the most recent trade volume, so I don't run out of Giant Days goodness, but I can never wait more than a week.
Steven Universe! Remember how I love SFF with moms? Well, Steven Universe has ton of moms! First Steven has three adoptive moms, plus his dead mom who is still pretty important to the plot and not just conveniently not there. I love that Steven’s moms are all complex and flawed and all have different parenting styles but are still presented as good moms. But there are even more moms, many of the secondary character have moms who play important roles. And I love that several of them are introduced as performing not mom roles before their relationships with their kids is made clear. It helps show these women as fully rounded people. But moms aren’t the only thing I love about the show. I love how rich and detailed the setting is not just the wider magical world but also the mundane Beach City. I also love how the show focuses on building relationships and solving problems but talking to people. The show has ton of complex and interesting characters who have complex and interesting relationships with each other and it's super great.
Yotsuba&! is probably the happiest manga I've ever read, which follows a four-year-old girl as she moves to a new neighbourhood, has adventures, and discovers all sorts of new cultural things! Yotsuba is full of joy and excitement about the world, and it's such a happy narrative!
What can I say other than The Good Place? The happiest time of my week is when I know a new episode is waiting for me. This TV show, which started out as a story about the afterlife and quickly turned into a festival of found family and philosophical musings about what it means to be a good person, is my favorite by far right now. The cast is simply fantastic, and I love the way the show is constantly reinventing itself and keeping us all guessing. The show is on midseason hiatus as of this writing, so now would be a great time to catch up!
