December Rec Roundtable: Women Everywhere

ladybusinessIt's December: the end of the year and the time of 1000 recommendation lists. We thought we'd get in on the action with some sweet themed recs! Enjoy these recs featuring some of our favorite girls and women.
She-Ra and the Princesses of Power! As the subtitle suggests there are a lot of princesses in the new She-Ra, and they are all pretty great! The show is just full of awesome ladies with very few male characters. This means that there are all kinds of different relationships between women shown: friendship, rivalry, there’s pair of princesses that seem to be a couple, there's an aunt/niece relationship, and a mother/daughter relationship, too. I love the variety of body types and haircuts shown. Plus the show is just really charming and wholesome.
So. much. to. rec. Look, I'm just going to full on cheat here, and give you a ton of TV shows to check out!
Then plump for the latest series of Dr Who starring JODI WHITTAKER as the Thirteenth Doctor as my main rec!!! Imagine me singing 'Looks like we made it' while waving a lighter, and watching emotional fanvids of this series. I love Thirteen! I love Yaz! And it took us soooooo long to get here. I'm emotionally spent by the fact that this series really exists and no one can take it away from me.
How choose? I loved the women of Naomi Novik’s latest book, Spinning Silver, although I wish some of them had ended up in a romance with each other instead of with their jerk boyfriends. Victoria Helen Stone’s Jane Doe is a revenge thriller with a very ruthless woman at the center, and that (of course) spoke to my heart. And I loved the all-ages comic Patsy Walker AKA Hellcat, which follows the (mis)adventures of a street-level superhero trying to make her way in the world.
First, I totally cosign everything Jenny said about Spinning Silver (including a side-eye to some of the romances). There are so many wonderful women in that story, and many different kinds of women from different kinds of worlds. Smart women, resourceful women, strong women, passive women, rich women, poor women, old women, young women. Also, so I'm not just piggybacking on someone else's rec :) I'd like to take this opportunity to plug Seanan McGuire's October Daye books, which is one of my favorite book series running right now. The protagonist, Toby Daye, solves mysteries, unties political knots, and protects people as best she can. And she is surrounded by so many female allies and enemies—this is another world where the women don't fall into just a few stock character types. They're wonderful and in some cases terrible, and I love it.
Oh, look, another prompt that lets me rec some of my favorite fantasy authors like Kate Elliott's Court of Fives series, full of amazing young women who all have strong relationships with each other. Then The Bone Witch by Rin Chupeco which is built on a foundation of women's power and relationships with each other. The Prey of Gods by Nicky Drayden has several female characters I loved, but saying more would rob the narrative a bit and I won't do that. But it's weird and bananas and great! And of course there are two of my favorite women in science fiction right now, Chrisjen Avasarala and Bobbie Draper, from The Expanse. You could read the books by James S.A. Corey and get a little of them or watch the show and get A FACE FULL, because the casting was spot on. And since I'm here I want to mention Aloy from Horizon: Zero Dawn, who I loved unconditionally and would go into battle for. This game has a narrative setting so even if you don't do games normally, you can totally give this one a shot if you can find a friend to loan you a PS4.
