1. The #BlackSpecFic report for 2017 is live at Fireside magazine. Here's a quick snapshot:

So what happened in 2017? Like the previous year, Black representation generally improved at a slightly faster rate overall, but those improvements were confined to a handful of magazines — not all but most of which were doing relatively well before. The good news is that the primary growth driver appears to be new authors.

Click through for the full analysis and data, which includes discussion of the impact Fiyah magazine has had on the field.

2. Our very own Clare wrote a great article for SYFY called 'Not gay enough': Ruby Rose, gatekeeping and toxic fandom.

3. I really liked Jenny's recent review of The Secret Lives of Colour, which made me interested in a book I would previously never have thought could catch my attention. I love when reviews do this!

4. Love, love, love this montage to The Breakfast Club from the Wonder Woman 1984 cast.

5. 13 Sci-Fi & Fantasy Books by POC That Could Be 'The Next Game of Thrones'.I mean, the framing of that headline is not great, but the books on the list are well worth a look.

6. [twitter.com profile] coolcurrybooks made a list of queer SFF books coming out in 2019.

7. Finishing up with a really fun Brooklyn Nine Nine cast photo. :D

8. I was totally fascinated by this essay examining parallels between the Christian gospels and fanfiction. The gospels of Matthew and Luke, in particular, were written as separate responses to the gospel of Mark and a lost gospel that Biblical scholars refer to as "Q", which is similar to how modern fanfic writers expand on canons and focus on different aspects of the canon in their work.

9. Actress Loan Tran, better known to most of us by her English name Kelly Marie, wrote a powerful New York Times editorial about her experiences with racism, both while growing up in the United States and in her interactions with Star Wars fandom.

10. I was fortunate to be in the audience for the Hugo Awards ceremony this past Sunday. There were many fabulous moments, but the stand-out was N.K. Jemisin's acceptance of her third-straight best novel Hugo -- a feat that no author has ever before accomplished. (You can also read the text of her speech here, but I recommend the video if possible.) The detailed voting stats are available here.

Criticism & Debate

Indeed, we do have a comment policy.

What's with your subtitle?

It's a riff off an extremely obscure meme only Tom Hardy and Myspace fans will appreciate.
