(Warning for mention of sexual harassment in the last two links in this section.)

1. Look at the new promotional posters for Black Panther! Just LOOK at them!

2. The cast of the
new adaptation of The Lion King has been announced and it is glorious.

3. Knights Of is a new children's publishing company with a focus on diversity on the shelf and behind the scenes.

4. In the next edition of Fanworks, I'm going to post about a lot of the great Halloween costumes I saw being shared around the internet. However, dog costumes don't fit neatly into the Fanworks format so lucky you, I'm going to show you the 'dog as mop' costume now!

5. Dr Who's three (THREE!) new companions have been announced. Anyone have thoughts about the inclusion of another well-known actor (Bradley Walsh) this time?

6. Five of Kameron Hurley's Nyx short stories are getting made into a book so everyone can enjoy new Nyxnissa So Dasheem stories!

7. Here is Anthony Rapp's full story of how Kevin Spacey made sexual advances towards him when he was 14.

8. Gal Gadot has stated she won't sign on for a Wonder Woman sequel unless Brett Ratner, accused of sexual harassment, is removed from the franchise. Once again, I love her.

9. I enjoyed Thor: Ragnarok immensely for a number of reasons. Among them were the movie's interesting takes on imperialism and colonialism. The film's director, Taika Waititi, is Maori, and this article by Dan Taipua talks about the Maori influences on the film. I also recommend this review by Alex Acks, which includes some great thoughts on the anti-imperialism narrative. Major spoilers at both links.

10. I was pretty saddened by the recent passing of actor Robert Guillaume, who I mostly knew and loved from the 1980s sitcom Benson. NPR's Linda Holmes shares a tribute to his character on Sports Night, a television executive, which talks about the ways the show depicted a black man as a leader.

11. Controversies over performances of "The Star-Spangled Banner" at US sporting events are not new, but I'd never heard this story before. In 1968, Latin American recording artist Jose Feliciano performed a jazzy, Latin-guitar inspired version of the anthem before Game 5 of the World Series. You can see the performance at the above link; I found it quite lovely, but audiences of the time were incensed, and it almost entirely derailed Feliciano's recording career. But it paved the way for future artistic interpretations of the song (many of which also linked in the story), and now it's considered almost commonplace to put your own spin on it.

12. My spouse found me someone who painted a four metre wide glow-in-the-dark picture of the galaxy and this is possibly the greatest thing I've seen all day.

13. I accidentally ended up with a thread of all of the short stories I read since about Friday, so if you want something short to read chances are I've got you covered. (Shout out to [personal profile] bookgazing who is probably responsible for most of them!)

What's with your subtitle?

It's a riff off an extremely obscure meme only Tom Hardy and Myspace fans will appreciate.
