1. We've got a release date for Wonder Woman 2! Although, apparently still no consensus on whether Patty Jenkins will be returning to direct.

2. Gal Gadot meets a young fan & the pictures will make your heart melt.

3. Colson Whitehead won the 2017 Arthur C. Clarke award for The Underground Railroad.

4. Alert - T'Challa and Killmonger have 'Xavier/Magneto chemistry' in the Black Panther film according to Michael B. Jordan. *swoons*

5. Great piece on How Nolan forgot the Desis at Dunkirk. So many World War films omit the presence of Indian soldiers and it is hard not to be grumpy that Dunkirk is getting lauded to the skies when it whitewashes history. If Wonder Woman can put Asian soldiers in background shots, and include an Asian soldier as a secondary character, it really feels incumbent on Dunkirk (a full on period piece) to

6. Want to hear more about the history of chromatic people at Dunkirk? Sunnysingh_n6 offers up some good resources and also calls for viewers to think critically about the historical media they consume.

7. The 2016 #BlackSpecFic report is out at Fireside and the creators feel there's cause for optimism based on the changes they've seen in the short fiction field.

8. Stephanie Wobbe has a really interesting piece about Becoming Mary Jane up at gal-dem. I can't get this show yet but it might be of interest to US people with Netflix.

9. The BBC recently had to publish its presenter's salaries and in a shocking twist female stars get paid less than male stars. Tony Hall, Director General, says 'don't worry, we've got a plan & it's only going to take three more years' which, understandably, has not gone down well.

10. In related news, commentators have been analysing the pay gap between white stars and BME stars at the BBC. It is truly staggering to hear that the top white, male earner makes about the same as all BME high earners put together. And just 10 of the 96 highest paid stars at the BBC are chromatic people.

11. There have been a lot of good responses to HBO's proposed series, Confederate, and why it is a terrible idea, especially at this moment in our history. One of my favorites is this piece by Ta-Nehisi Coates.

12. If you live anywhere in North America, you'll be able to see a solar eclipse on Monday, August 21, weather permitting. Here's a handy tool for US residents to enter their zip code and learn when the eclipse will peak in their area.

13. NPR recently put out their list of the 150 greatest albums by women artists (including mixed gender bands with a strong female presense like Fleetwood Mac). The article where music editor Anne Powers describes her goals for the project is pretty great.

14. Vulture provides a valuable public service with this guide to the similar-looking white British dudes of Dunkirk. (Note, I haven't seen Dunkirk yet, so I don't know how actually useful this article is, but it was hella funny.)

15. "Is My Beloved Peggy Carter Coming Back for Avengers: Infinity War?" Dear The Mary Sue: please stop making me want things I can never have.

16. Angelica Jade Bastien shares her list of the 11 most influential female action heroes of all time. I haven't seen every movie on this list, but it seems legit to me.

17. "Everything Except Country and Rap" is a good examination of this common response, heard mostly from urban and suburban white folks, when they talk about what kind of music they like, and its classist and racist roots. I've certainly been guilty of using this construction, even as my musical tastes have broadened over the years. Some fascinating tidbits on the history of popular music genres, too.

18. Rachel Neumeier posted Epic Fantasy 101 after a Twitter discussion and shared some recs. I am always looking for accessible recs so this is great! Lots of good debate in the comments.

19. We Need to Talk About Digital Blackface in Reaction GIFs was good food for thought.

20. An author asked to be removed from the Dragon Awards short list and they refused. I am still boggling over this email they sent! I have read some smug, condescending emails in my day but this dude is going for the gold.

Good morning Ms. Littlewood,

While I appreciate your sense of fair play, I must decline your request to remove The Hidden People from the Dragon Award Nominations.

We are aware of the rabid puppies and justice warriors efforts to effect the voting and we go through a number of steps to avoid ballot stuffing or other vote rigging behaviors. While we didn’t start the Dragon Awards to foil these two groups, we believe that as we add voters, they will become irrelevant in the our awards.

We believe the “people’s choice” approach is a better way to recognize authors and their works. The Dragon Awards ballot – which consists of works nominated by fans – is a broad representation of the best science fiction and fantasy literature available today. With 53 novels listed, there is actually something for everybody on this ballot.

The original purpose of the Dragon Awards was not so much as awards but as a quality reading list. The cost of reading current material has been rising steadily for years. Library budgets are not adequate to have all, or even a decent collection of the type of materials that Dragon Con fans enjoy.

Thank you for your interest in the Dragon Con Awards. Please do not let Mr. [redacted] ruin for you, the positive reception of your work.

Pat Henry – President

Dragon Awards: garbage, to be avoided.

[Editor's note: As of August 10th, the award administrators have reconsidered and allowed Littlewood to remove herself from the ballot (scroll all the way to the bottom for updated info). However, their initial response remains appalling and worthy of concern.]

21. Ava DuVernay Adapting Octavia Butler’s Dawn for Television — BRB, using my giftcards to buy this whole series and move it to the top of my reading pile. PS, Ava, I have another great book for you to read called The Fifth Season....

22. Hey, everyone interested in politics + like audio is listening to Hellbent, right?

23. Three of the books I added to my to-read list in the last two weeks: What Happened by Hillary Rodham Clinton, Moonstruck Volume 1 by Grace Ellis, In Other Lands by Sarah Rees Brennan

24. The Historical Significance of 'Cosmopolitan' as an Insult — this guy is a creep.

25. Weekly Roundup for August 4 from Paper Cat Press! This a round up to "provide links and summarized information about the crowdfunded projects, creator opportunities, and resources that have caught my eye over the week." I have discovered some cool stuff here, so highly recommend it!

26. This video of storm formation is beautiful, the music is beautiful, it's all beautiful. Plait explains some of the cloud formations in his post. There is some flashy lightning, if flashy stuff is bad for you.

It's a riff off an extremely obscure meme only Tom Hardy and Myspace fans will appreciate.
