Although I agree with this sentiment in theory, it gets a little tougher when you're talking about fanworks with the kind of production values that we see in Star Trek fan films. We're talking movies and serials made with professional quality equipment and starring professional actors. It's a little harder to continue on producing and distributing type of content in the face of attempts to shut it down as compared to fanfic, vids, and amateur film productions. This is not to say anything about the quality of professional-level vs. amateur productions -- this is fandom, so of course there is plenty of wonderful content being created by amateurs. But for a fandom that has so often blurred the line between amateur and pro (which I understand is often the case with Star Trek), to be forced to brighten that line could prove a disaster.
It's the precedent being set that bothers me more than anything. We have seen a move toward more openness and acceptance of fanworks by TPTB in recent years, so it's disheartening to see such a large backwards step, especially in a community that's been so important to the history and development of western media fandom.
