Blue is a multi-fannish, all-the-ships kind of fangirl who has a list of unread fannish bookmarks just shy of 3,600 and thus is never, ever getting caught up, but you can check out the things she's read and thinks you might enjoy too via her Pinboard Rec Tags. You can also find a number of rec posts on Dreamwidth at [personal profile] bluemeridian, and some inevitably turn up amidst the random chatter on Twitter at [twitter.com profile] bmeridian and the reblogs on Tumblr at [tumblr.com profile] bluemeridian, too.

[personal profile] renay asked me to be a guest reccer for [community profile] ladybusiness and I had a brief moment of astonishment ("Me??") followed by saying, "Sure!" Then there was the first challenge: picking no more than 10 fanworks to rec. Eek! I wanted them to be a variety of fandoms and ended up deciding to choose 10 fics that I'd read fairly recently and, ideally, that I hadn't recced anywhere besides via bookmark on Pinboard. I wasn't perfect on that last condition but these are mostly new links for me to be sharing.

[FIC] [Rivers of London - Ben Aaronovitch] A Country You Remember by [archiveofourown.org profile] Wapabi (1,355 words) (Molly, Toby)
(Also has a podfic link in the end notes.) For anyone familiar with Rivers of London, this is an excellent Molly fic. For her, the Folly is a living thing, slower now but waking ever so slightly with a new start, and Molly serves the rhythms that change over time. With opinions. And sometimes grudgingly. This is a bit sweet and a bit funny and an all around lovely fleshing out of the canonically quiet and slightly mysterious Molly.
When a girl goes into service, people like to think she pledges fealty to the family, but that isn’t true. She serves the house.

[FIC] [Avengers] world looking in by [archiveofourown.org profile] irnan (6,070 words) (James "Bucky" Barnes/Natasha Romanov, Steve Rogers)
Two highly competent disasters both deal with their (massive) issues as related to moving in together and with revealing anything at all about their relationship to anyone else. Steve alternates between confusion, frustration, and facepalming.

[FIC] [OMG Check Please!] The Love Song of Susan Bittle by [archiveofourown.org profile] mahons_ondine (3,343 words) (Suzanne Bittle/Coach Bittle, Eric Bittle/Jack Zimmermann)
This is Suzanne's POV on her life, but most especially on the part of it that is Eric growing up. It tugs at your heartstrings as it resonates with her love for him and how she fears for him and how bittersweet it is to let him go.
Suzanne Bittle is not a stupid woman. People get confused sometimes because sh'’s a crier and a woman and southern and a pinterest obsessed baking fanatic. But she’s not stupid. She may talk slow, but she doesn't think slow.

[FIC] [Hannibal (TV)] Somewhere Between by [archiveofourown.org profile] damnslippyplanet (7,016 words) (Will Graham/Hannibal Lecter)
Aka "The Postshower Fic". Gorgeous Hannibal POV as he realizes quite quickly that his interest in Will post-TWOTL isn't without an element of the carnal and then slooooowly realizes that Will is, in fact, on to him. Watching Hannibal suffer from his own drama is always fun, watching him suffer over Will is even more so, and this is all that wrapped in Slippy's delightful-to-read to style.

[FIC] [Star Wars] Ingredients of the Wrack by [archiveofourown.org profile] queerly_it_is (24,272 words) (Poe Dameron/Finn/Rey)
Exceptional mission fic where Poe, Finn, and Rey go undercover for the Resistance on a prison ship. They arrive to find their contact dead and there's no way out but through in a well plotted fic with great OCs and an increasingly ominous situation. I loved Poe's POV and the way Rey and Finn help hold him together when the walls start closing in.

[FIC] [The Man from U.N.C.L.E.] The Splintered Labyrinth by [archiveofourown.org profile] Csoru (5,667 words) (Ilya Kuryakin/Napoleon Solo/Gaby Teller)
This is an amazing Gaby POV through part of an evening where Gaby and Napoleon infiltrate a masked ball while Ilya is on comms. The tone of the thing is like slip-shine silver with Gaby's languid observations and sharp-edged perceptions as she literally and metaphorically dances with Napoleon and they both lure in brittle, twitchy Ilya. Part of what makes it notable is the way Gaby approaches it all, what she shows and what she keeps in reserve, and how it's all orchestrated even when it's impetuous. In terms of Interpersonal Relationships Among Spies, it's particularly brilliant.

[FIC] [Smallville] The Butterfly Effect by [archiveofourown.org profile] spike21 (11,648 words) (Clark Kent/Lex Luthor, Martha Kent, Jonathan Kent)
Originally posted in the show's first season in 2001, this fic has been around fandom longer than I have and is now available at the AO3 via the Open Doors content rescue of the Smallville Slash Archive. I didn't arrive in fandom until my late 20's, which was round about 2004, and while I spent a whole summer hitting the SSA's Random button (it was a highly educational summer, lemme tell you), I'm not sure I ever read this before last year. This is Lex, unable to let sleeping dogs lie (but when did he ever). He manages to create a drug that gives him powers like that of the deceased Cassandra and, shockingly, it doesn't go well. It could/will all end in ruin, Lex knows for certain after all (except, of course, it doesn't). This is Lex at his self-destructive best, both damnation and salvation in the same breath, and Clark, who's greatest superpower is stubbornness in the face of a determined Luthor.

[FIC] [Mad Max (Fury Road)] Den Mother by [archiveofourown.org profile] Alex51324 (4,628 words) (War Boy OCs, War Pup OCs, Milking Mother OC, Vuvalini OC)
Set right after the end of the movie, this is the War Pups' nursery when they hear fighting break out as Furiosa's band seizes control of the Citadel and the word spreads of the power change. The characterizations and bits of world-building are great and if it ended on that day the fic would still be rec worthy, but Maw's POV on some of the changes that come after is a very nice addition.

[FIC] [X-Men] Fireheart by [archiveofourown.org profile] ikeracity (5,494 words) (Erik Lehnsherr/Charles Xavier, Azazel/Raven|Mystique)
A delightful modern dragon AU wherein Charles' bookstore is failing because he can't part with pieces of his hoard, Erik is... Erik, and Raven and Azazel are nesting aggressively over the imminent arrival of hatchlings. Sweet, uncomplicated, and entertaining with enough world building to make it all feel fleshed out.

[FIC] [Star Wars] the family amidala by [archiveofourown.org profile] dirgewithoutmusic (6,829 words) (Padmé Amidala, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Leia Organa, Luke Skywalker)
This is the Star Wars AU where Padmé lives and goes immediately into hiding with Obi-Wan and the infant Luke and Leia. A version of this fic, the very beginning of it, has made its way around Tumblr, but this is the extended version. It keeps the same tale-telling tone but spins the story out much further, following Luke and Leia as they grow up and as the events of A New Hope start to unfold.
When Padme had been sitting in her high senatorial apartment on Corsucant, holding Anakin’s sweaty hand, she had never imagined she’d be murmuring desperately soothing noises to her fussy daughter while she shot around a corner at stormtroopers, while R2D2 meddles with a ship’s blast doors behind her.

Luke starts teething on a hot jungle planet where they hunker down for three weeks, sleeping in an abandoned old temple and catching the local wildlife for dinner. Leia takes her first steps in the belly of a Corellian freighter they’ve stowed away on. She wobbles between Padme’s outstretched hands and Obi Wan’s knees and boxes of smuggled luxuries. When she falls down, Obi Wan surges forward, heart in his throat, but Leia laughs.

[ART] [DC Comics] Suicide Squad Harley Quinn by [tumblr.com profile] kevinwada (Harley Quinn/Poison Ivy)
Kevin Wada draws Harley in her outfit in the upcoming Suicide Squad film with one correction—her shirt now refers to her girlfriend and not (vomit) “daddy”.

[VID] [The Musketeers] All For Love by kynikey (4:41) (Full cast)
Indulgently lovely vid about pretty much every canon and non-canon pairing you can think of for this show. Very appropriate song and super sweet. I expect to have this on repeat when the final series ends this year *sob*.

[VID] [The Musketeers] Radioactive by hellaudi (3:03) (Athos, Porthos, Aremis and D'Artagnan) Even though this song was so overplayed in its time, I have a big weakness for vids set to it and tend to seek them all out in any big action fandom I fall into. This one opens quietly, makes stylish use of series one footage, and includes a nice section of short character studies in the middle.

[FIC] [The Avengers] Theory of Mind by [archiveofourown.org profile] seventymilestobabylon (28,497 words) (Steve/Tony)
Here is a story I have read 20+ times because it's and snarky and sharp but soft at the edges. Steve and Tony keep brushing against understanding each other and it never quite works out until it does. Even then it's imperfect and human and complicated and the painful reality of trying to fit yourself together with another person whose mind you can't read and who you have to learn to trust, even when trust is one of the hardest things. I wish I had better words to collect to share my love for this story because it definitely deserves them. It's wonderful.

[FIC] [Captain America: Civil War] Father's Day ficlet by [tumblr.com profile] orbingarrow (1,073 words) (Tony, Peter)
This is such an adorable story where Peter gets Tony a gift and Tony does a lot of mental gymnastics over how to react. It's heartwarming and bittersweet at the same time and I'm so here for MCU Tony & Peter adventures. I'd feel embarrassed about it if it wasn't so freaking adorable.

[ART] [Avengers] Black Widow by [tumblr.com profile] kadeart
I love the colors and lines on this piece tons. I also love the movement her hair gives, as if she's turning to look at you.

[FIC] [Avengers Academy] I Wanna Wear You Like a Suit by [archiveofourown.org profile] spindizzy (946 words) (Steve/Tony)
Susan loves me and writes me adorable fic where Steve and Tony make out and also argue about robots (I am on Tony's side re: self-replicating robots).

[ART] [Hamilton] Ham4Pamphlet edited by Ariella Jovellanos (Ensemble)
Forty-six different artists got together and illustrated all of the songs from Hamilton to put together as a pamphlet for the cast, and it is AMAZING. There's such variation in styles and interpretations, and even when I don't like the art style itself it's still recognisable and cool? The really stand-out ones for me:

  • Guns and Ships by Claire Hummel. Those details! Those colours! The way it looks so classical and modern at the same time!

  • We Know by Jasmine J. Bastista. I especially like this one for picking out my favourite line of the song ("You set the dogs after my scent, that's fine."), the expressions and the colours and the creepy fucking hell dogs.

  • Best of Wives and Best of Women by Stef Masciandaro. Well, this is the best example I've ever seen of causing heartbreak in a single image. Somehow the fact that we can't see Eliza's expression makes it worse, and I love it. The colouring and lighting are stellar, and Eliza's pose is just perfect.

[ART] [Mass Effect] Girl came out of the womb an apex predator by [tumblr.com profile] pheberoni (Commander Shepard)
This art is excellent. I love the red glow of Commander Shepard (especially her eye), and how young!Shepard has the same determination in her posing and expression? I like how clearly it's showing that she was never someone to be fucked with, that she's always been someone who's ready to fight. (AND THERE'S A PROCESS GIF! I love those things, they're like magic.)

[FIC] [Civil War] all these things I've done by [archiveofourown.org profile] lazulisong (811 words) (Sam Wilson, Bucky Barnes)
It's a character study of Sam and Bucky and it breaks my heart, especially the bits with Sam and his feelings about Riley, and that ending.

Oh my god, Blue, you're killing me. The OMG Check Please piece had me in tears, and the Rivers of London one is just so perfect. I am in fandoms I didn't even know existed! Here I go down the rabbit hole; thank you!

I haven't read Rivers of London, but that summary caught my eye, and I'm glad I clicked thru. It's a wonderful character study that stands alone perfectly well.
