This week we are launching a new feature that will crop up once a month to bring everyone even more recs. This week, we're happy to welcome [personal profile] kaytaylorrea to Lady Business with a collection of her own recs.

curved text in a thick cursive script that says Guest Reccer with a tiny horseshoe underneath it.

Kay Taylor Rea is a bi lady nerd who’s unduly obsessed with: diverse media of all sorts (with special fondness for comics, romance, SFF, and YA), orange foods, Hamilton, and hockey. Kay is a writer, a Slytherin, a reluctant desert dweller, and an amateur hermit. When she’s not tweeting ([twitter.com profile] kaytaylorrea) about her feels or reading submissions for Uncanny Magazine, she’s writing about comics at Panels, books at Book Riot, or fanfiction at read, rec, write, repeat. Rea rhymes with Kay. If you were curious.

When [personal profile] renay asked if I was interested in putting together a rec list for [community profile] ladybusiness, my immediate response was:

Poe and Finn hugging

There are very few things I love as much as helping people find new reads. I have a biweekly Fic Rec Monday series over on my blog where I share some of my favorite fanfics. Putting together a list for [community profile] ladybusiness should've been a piece of cake. Except, friends, that I was told I could pick anything I like. There are so many stories to share (obviously, I have a whole series about that), so how was I supposed to narrow down my favorites when my AO3 bookmarks look like this?

image that reads 1 of 20 out of 1333 bookmarks

*cue semi-hysterical laughter*

It's fine. I'm fine. Everything's cool. Once I thought about it for a while (read: roughly a week), I decided that I'd share ten of my favorite long fics. If you're a regular [community profile] ladybusiness reader you probably know what that means, but if not, a long fic is exactly what it sounds like: works of fanfiction that are long enough to be considered a novella or novel. It's fandom and so there are variable definitions we can quibble over, but basically we're talking about long, self-contained fics. So sit back, relax, and get ready for some awesome reads.

[FIC] [Amazing Spider-Man -- Web Films] Maggie Fitzgerald and the Saltwater Drip by [archiveofourown.org profile] kaikamahine (79,626 words) (Peter Parker/Gwen Stacy, Mary Jane Watson, Flash Thompson, Miles Morales, Harry Osborn)
This is everything I wanted the Webb Spidey movies to be. [archiveofourown.org profile] kaikamahine imagines an alternate first film canon with Gwen being bitten by the spider (which, honestly, makes a lot more sense) and basically everything is better. Not perfect, obviously, because Gwen is still a superpowered teenage vigilante on top of normal high school problems, but better. Extra super bonus points for heavy roles given to Mary Jane ("Call me MJ, please," she corrects. "As I am neither a shoe nor an illegal substance.") and Miles ("My Friendship is Magic circle contains Ganke and Kate Bishop.").

Gwen's not going to lie: there are definite advantages to wearing a mask of masculinity as well as one of spandex. Like, some men create entire blockbuster action movies trying to capture the feeling she gets when she's in the middle of a fistfight and she knows she's going to win. She's not going to deny she likes the respect she gets sometimes -- nothing overt, not really, and maybe not something she'd noticed if she'd been raised a boy, but it's definitely something she notices now.

People have no trouble asking Gwen Stacy for her time: "Gwen, can you do me a favor?"; "Gwen, I can borrow your—"; "Gwenny-bee, can you … oh, you already did? Thanks!"

Sometimes she feels like, as a girl, her time belongs to everybody who could think to utilize it, but when she's Spider-Man, when she's shaped differently and her voice registers differently and people refer to her by the male pronoun in the excited Tweets they post, she can't help but feel like they think her time is a reward. There was even a young woman who apologized for needing to be rescued the other day — I'm sorry, she said, I'm sure you have better things to do, and Gwen had boggled at her, because what.

[FIC] [Downton Abbey] Hollowing Stone by [archiveofourown.org profile] shuofthewind (43,756 words) (Tom Branson/Sybil Crawley, Mary Crawley/Matthew Crawley, Edith Crawley, Anthony Strallan, Robert Crawley, Cora Crawley, Violet Crawley, Gwen Dawson, Anna Smith, Martha Levinson, Isobel Crawley)
Downton Abbey had a lot of faults and was prone to ridiculous, soapy story-lines, but it has excellent bones to build a story around. Hollowing Stone takes place in an alternate universe season one in which some people have soulmates, in particular these people have soul marks indicating a potential soulbond. Hello, fanfic newbs, welcome to the wonderful world of tropes. Honestly that's just set dressing for a lovely Sybil character piece with a slow build romance and a wealth of literary references. There are intriguing and well-researched forays into the political discourse of the day, with particular attention paid to women's rights and class differences.

She doesn’t understand how soulmarks work, or why people are bonds of others, but she understands Tom Branson. He’s the pauses in her trains of thought. He’s the only person she knows who just lets her speak. She has so many things she wants to say, and Branson listens. Even if they weren’t bonded, even if he wasn’t her mark, she’d like him just for that, she thinks. He talks with her and asks her questions like her thoughts matter, like her opinions are worth something. It’s not as if she doesn’t get that from other people; she’s not ignored like Edith, even if she isn’t made the centre of attention like Mary, but at the same time, people don’t actually actively listen to her, either. Nobody at home wants to hear about the movement, or the Labour party, or the Cat-and-Mouse law. Nobody at home wants to talk about the injustices of the Empire with her. But Branson does, and it’s not like her father would think at all. He’s not trying to get her to come ‘round to his way of thinking, he’s not trying to make her a socialist or join a revolutionary group, he just talks, and even when they disagree it’s not a bad thing at all. They talk, and it matters, and she can’t explain why.

[FIC] [Harry Potter] Earthbound Spook by [archiveofourown.org profile] cest_what (57,500 words) (Draco Malfoy/Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger)
Like a lot of people my age (twentysomethings, essentially), Harry Potter was my introduction to fandom in general and transformative works in specific. There are literal hundreds of HP fics I could rec, but I have an especial fondness for Earthbound Spook. It's hard not to love a story that opens with

Two months after Draco Malfoy was reported dead, Harry and Ron found him tangled in Strangler Ivy on the grounds of Hogwarts.

It had already been an odd morning.

This fic is what would've happened if the Golden Trio conducted their Horcrux hunt from Hogwarts and were joined by a Gryffindor Draco from an alternate dimension. Yes, I know, but it's honestly brilliant. The prose and pacing are lovely, everyone is written very close to canon, the dialogue is snarky and hilarious, and the romance is handled with sensitivity and delicacy. Plus, it always broke my heart that Hermione left school before her seventh year. It makes a great deal of sense for her to have continued access to the Hogwarts library for researching possible Horcruxes and methods of destruction.

[FIC] [MCU/Captain America] The Fifties by [archiveofourown.org profile] speranza (28,185 words) (James "Bucky" Barnes/Peggy Carter/Steve Rogers)
This fic broke both my heart and my brain, in the best way. It's almost impossible to discuss the plot in detail without spoiling the brilliant twist, but you're just going to have to trust me on this one. All of the post-war awesomeness and OT3 feels and the SSR being what it really should've been. Gorgeous.

Peggy was waiting at the station: Steve had commandeered every two-way radio, every military telephone, every signal station, every carrier pigeon they passed. "Peggy, darling; we're alive; we're all right, we're in—" Iceland, Dublin, Manchester Central. "We'll be back as soon as we can," and Bucky would smirk and slouch back and say, "Well, I can see how this is gonna go," which usually earned him an eyeroll or an elbow or a smack.

She was waiting for him on the platform, and time slowed for a moment before they rushed for each other boldly, shamelessly, all pretenses dropped, and when Steve pulled Peggy into his arms she pressed up hard against him, so hard that he could feel all of her, every bit of her. He shivered with longing and held her to him so tightly that her leather jacket creaked, and then she pulled away and turned to Bucky, who was just standing there, and grabbed his face with both hands and kissed him, full on the mouth. Bucky said, "um."

Peggy said, "You brought him home; I know it was you," and Bucky said, "Uh, yeah; guilty as charged."

[FIC] [MCU/Thor/Guardians of the Galaxy] Life, Love, Empire and Cake by [archiveofourown.org profile] manic_intent (45,660 words) (Thor/Peter Quill, Gamora, Rocket Raccoon, Drax the Destroyer, Groot)
Because I am weak for well-written, plotty fics that are simultaneously tropetastic, I present to you: Thor/Peter Quill arranged marriage fic. *jazz hands* Seriously, it's got the campy humor of GotG combined with the political machinations of the Thor films with added incompetent courting. What more could you want?

"DNA matching and Spartax Imperial edict have... declared... that you are Crown Prince Star-Lord, son of King J-Son of the Royal Conclave of Spartax. King J-Son has provided us with a set of galactic coordinates in the event of your return to Xandar and-"

"Wait, wait, wait-"

"-duly instructs you to make a jump for Spartax Imperial space-"

"Look, is this some kind of joke-"

"-or in alternative, you are cleared for a Bifrost Relay to Asgard, whereupon you will be introduced to your betrothed, Crown Prince Thor of the Asgardians."

"Okay," Peter says faintly, after a long pause. "Now I know that you're shitting me."

[FIC] [Pride & Prejudice/Mansfield Park] i'll write you harmony in c by [archiveofourown.org profile] magneticwave (32,472 words) (Mary Bennet/Henry Crawford, Mary Bennet/Colonel Fitzwilliam, Elizabeth Bennet, Jane Bennet, Fitzwilliam Darcy, Charles Bingley, Lydia Bennet, Kitty Bennet, Fanny Price)
If you'd told me I'd be reccing a Mary Bennet-centric story I would've laughed in your face and then probably passed you a cup of tea while patting you on the arm, calling you a 'sweet summer child' for good measure. But then [archiveofourown.org profile] magneticwave had to go and write i'll write you harmony in c like the complete jerk that they are, so here I am, telling everyone to go read a hilarious modern AU fic about the trials and tribulations of uni student Mary Bennet (whose internal checklist to Being a Good Person—go to medical school; join Médecins Sans Frontières; save lives—is a somewhat oversimplification of matters).

“The leftover curry literally erupted into flames.” Mary blows out her cheeks and gestures with her hands to frame empty space about the size of a beach ball. “It was beautiful. Naturally, my practically perfect in every way sister apologized until she was almost crying, but it was definitely on purpose. I knew she had unplumbed depths—hard not to, when she shares a gene pool with me and the rest of my sisters—but it was fantastic.”

Harry and Catherine are both riveted. “What happened next?” Harry begs. “Please tell me someone shoved Lydia’s face into the fire and burned off all of her hair.”

“Sadly, no,” says Mary with a sigh. She uses her toe to push her swivel chair into a half-circle. “Charlie dashed for the fire-extinguisher in the kitchen and put the whole thing out. You could tell Lizzie was thinking about it, though. She had that gleam in her eye.”

[FIC] [Smallville] Conflicts of Interest by [archiveofourown.org profile] rageprufrock (54,768 words) (Connor Luthor, Lex Luthor, Clark Kent, Mercy Graves, Lois Lane, Perry White)
This is a hilarious Smallville-style take on the Superboy origin story. For DC fans who are less familiar with Kon El's origins, Connor's discovery of his true parentage will be just as hilarious for you as it is for me every. Single. Time. This story features one of the most complex Lex Luthor depictions I've ever seen (I'm including the comics in that statement) and [archiveofourown.org profile] rageprufrock displays her typically strong grasp of plot, pacing, worldbuilding, and characterization. (Plus, if you like Conflicts of Interest there's an 80k sequel, Visiting Hours.)

Conner's dad didn't like talking about Conner's mom much; it always made him uncomfortable, like he wasn't sure exactly what to say or how to say it. Which was weird, because Conner's dad always knew what to say and how to say it, even if he didn't have anything to say at all, which Conner learned the hard way because he got lectured a lot.

"Why can't we pretend we don't have any problems like people do on TV?" Conner used to complain.

And his dad would look at him for a long time like he was about to laugh and say, "One day, I'll tell you a story about my own father. But until then, we're going to talk about this," and then he'’d just go on and on and on. Conner would force himself to nod appropriately every time his dad mentioned Alexander the Great or The Art of War.

But the point was, it was weird to see his dad have nothing to say, which was why Conner knew something had happened to his mom, and it had to be terrible.

"Maybe it was aliens," Geoffrey had said once during a sleepover at Conner's house.

"I don't think so," Conner had replied skeptically. "Dad put missiles on our house so he could shoot stuff down a long time ago." Geoffrey had thought that was the coolest thing ever, so then they'd gone to look at where the steel barrels were elegantly hidden into the architecture and forgot all about Conner's mom in favor of looking for the launch sequences.

[FIC] [Star Trek: AOS] With My Feet Toward the Stars (let me remember you as you were when you existed) by [archiveofourown.org profile] kariye (33,267 words) (James T. Kirk/Spock)
Written in the first, glorious wave of fic after the first Trek reboot film, this story is still one of my favorites in the fandom. In a slowly unfurling Spock character study, told in nonlinear fashion, we learn about the impact of the five-year mission (oh, the five-year mission that never was, darn you, Into Darkness) on the crew, but more particularly on Spock, Kirk, and the Enterprise herself.

When Spock was a child, his mother used to send him to bed, saying, “Sweet dreams.” At age five, Spock informed her that it was illogical to say such a thing to him because she was well aware that Vulcans do not dream.

“Oh, Spock,” she’d said. “Everyone dreams.” Sarek, working across the room, had looked up but said nothing.

+++

Spock takes his evening meal in the main mess four times a week. His counterpart had advised him to do so. “Humor the humans, Spock,” he’d said with a disconcerting thread of amusement in his voice. Spock hears the wrinkles of his own voice there, deeper, smoother, and more flexible.

The advice has proven useful. On certain occasions, members of his science staff will join him to discuss their research. The bridge crew also eats with him when they arrive at the same time. Uhura takes at least one meal a week with him after their shift is over. More often she eats breakfast with him – yogurt and fruit for her; juice, fruit, and a nutritional blend of grains and proteins for Spock. Even McCoy eats with him when Kirk heads for his table.

[FIC] [Stargate: Atlantis] Freedom's Just Another Word For Nothing Left To Lose by [personal profile] synecdochic (20,309 words) (Rodney McKay, Elizabeth Weir, Ronon Dex, Sam Carter, Radek Zelenka)
I am not, by nature, a particularly weepy person, but this fic gets me every damn time. It's so beautiful and richly nuanced that after you finish I recommend you check out [personal profile] synecdochic's DVD Commentary where they share the story behind the story so you can be even more emotionally compromised. Technically this is an AU, since it's only canon compliant through the second season, but if memory serves it was written during the hiatus between seasons two and three. Freedom's Just Another Word For Nothing Left To Lose posits the SG:A characters careers after they abandon the city, specifically focusing on Rodney's post-military consultant life. Sprinkled through descriptions of Dr. McKay's first years teaching, we slowly discover what sort of horrors must've gone down for Rodney to leave the Stargate Program for a teaching position at a middling state school. This is a heartbreaking, but ultimately triumphant, story about the things we can discover about ourselves when we lose the people and places we love.

For Rodney's first semester at the university, the department chairman schedules him to teach two sections of PHYS101, commonly known as Bonehead Physics, and one section of PHYS441: Special Topics in Physics. This arrangement was painstakingly brokered during hiring negotiations. There's a seven-year gap on Rodney's CV where nearly everything he might have published was classified instead, and another thirteen before that where everything was classified but the little things. He knew when he first took the job it was a risk he'd have to accept, but he'd been young and stupid then. Decisions you make at twenty-five look different with twenty years of hindsight.

But the university isn't as bad as some of the places he could have wound up. The lab space is shit, and the physics program is so easy a gifted two-year-old could sail through, but the chairman, Dr. Vail, is quite a nice man, despite being a completely retarded rhesus monkey. Vail is willing to hire Rodney despite the way he looks on paper, on the strength of some of his older work and a good word from one of the few people Rodney still keeps in touch with from his graduate work. In exchange, Rodney, as the least-senior member of the department, is given the classes everyone else in the department would rather claw their eyeballs out than teach.

He doesn't mind — much — because they wrote it into his contract that he gets one section a semester to do whatever he wants with, and also because he's earned a little bit of boring in his life, and ultimately? In a face-off between the Wraith and undergrads for "Things Rodney McKay Never Wants To Encounter Again In His Entire Life", the Wraith win, hands-down.

[FIC] [Star Wars] step out into the sun by [archiveofourown.org profile] plutos (71,364 words) (Poe Dameron/Finn, Rey, Jessika Pava, Karé Kun, Iolo Arana, Temmin "Snap" Wexley, Leia Organa, BB-8)
I'm a well-known sucker for fake dating fics, and step out into the sun is a prime example of the trope. It started out as a Finn character study and grew into a sprawling examination of life in the Resistance, the development of platonic and romantic relationships, and finding your place in the universe. Shoutout to Elizabeth, fabulous booktuber [twitter.com profile] Books_Pieces, who first introduced me to this story.

BB-8 finds him nearly four hours later, sleeves rolled up and gloves on, scrubbing at a wall of the North corridor, humming out of tune to a song on the radio. After a bit of rummaging around the cart, familiarising himself with its limited contents, he'd stumbled across the radio and whacked the damn thing until it spit out some sound. He has no idea what language is coming from the garbled speakers but music is music and he's happy to fumble his way through the songs.

BB-8 spins around excitedly, whizzing off and chittering, bringing Poe with it when it returns.

“Finn, buddy, what are you doing?” Poe asks, his dark brow furrowed, eyeing Finn’s gloves carefully.

“I’m pitching in,” Finn replies, smiling as wide as he can. He likes the way it makes his cheeks ache, a sensation that he'd never felt before in all his years as a ‘trooper. “This is my home now and it's gonna sparkle.”

“Well, alright,” Poe says slowly, as if he's weighing up the benefits and losses of calling Finn out on his craziness.

Star Wars dogfights set to Kenny Loggins' "Danger Zone"—so, everything I am usually interested in in one place, which is handy.

[ART] [Final Fantasy VII] teen!Tifa and her cowgirl phase by [tumblr.com profile] tosquinha (Tifa Lockhart)
I looooove the fluid, graceful linework on this, with all the line width variation. The hint of ab musculature on her stomach is also super great!

[ART] [One Piece] bakaburg by [tumblr.com profile] bakankywithadon (Iceburg, Tyrranosaurus)
I adore Iceburg, and I'm always super pleased to see fanart of him. This is just a nice moment of him and his pet mouse.

[COMIC] [Dragon Age: Origins] Fuck Morrigan by [tumblr.com profile] gemwillyart (Female Tabris, Alistair Theirin)
Someone asked this artist, "How does your Tabris go about asking Alistair to do the ritual?" The artist provided. Beautifully.

[GIFSET] [Mulan/Sleeping Beauty] Sleeping Warrior AU by [tumblr.com profile] booasaur (Aurora/Mulan)
This is a superbly edited gifset wherein Aurora falls in love with both Mulan and Ping, not realizing they're the same person. It's super cute!

[VID] [Supernatural/Adventure Time] Supernatural Time by Demachic (0:14)
It's the Adventure Time intro, except for Supernatural! It's adorable! And well done! Watch it now!

[VID] [Star Wars/Alfred Hitchcock] Darth by Darthwest (Vador Aux Trousses) by Fabrice Mathieu (5:44) (Roger Thornhill, various droid cameos)
The classic scene from North by Northwest with Cary Grant being hunted by a crop duster... except it's a TIE fighter instead. Brilliant mash-up. The sound effects are particularly effective.

[ART] [DC Comics] Untitled by Lyns (Wonder Woman)
Lovely image of Diana in an almost Grecian style. Great colors.

[ART] [Dragon Age] "I distrust any event where hitting someone is not an option." by [tumblr.com profile] enigmaticagentalice (Cassandra Penteghast)
Another great artwork of a warrior woman, and more wonderful use of color.

[FIC] [Captain America: Civil War] Broken Pieces of a Whole by [archiveofourown.org profile] coaster (3459 words) (T'Challa, Steve Rogers, Bucky Barnes, Tony Stark, That Cellphone)
Here is a lovely fic about the immediate aftermath of That Scene in Captain America: Civil War, where T'Challa gets to be awesome and help everyone: Steve, Bucky, and Tony. I'm not familiar with T'Challa as a character yet, but this fic does a great job of getting into the head of character I watched on the screen and giving him so much empathy and compassion and determination to do the right thing. It's labelled as a shippy fic but it can also be read as gen, too, because there's ultimately no resolution there because this is more about T'Challa's choices on how to stop the violence, find justice, and stop being led around by hopes for revenge. I need to read more about T'Challa ASAP.

[ART] [ANAD Avengers] Tony & Kamala by [tumblr.com profile] dchanberry
I love everything about this art! The colors and the Kamala's determined look and Tony's excitement to be teaching are all perfect.

[ART] [Avengers] Steve/Tony by [tumblr.com profile] kelslk-art
Look at these two nerds in love and then admire the lineart/colors and how amazing they are (the light! the blushing! ahhhh).

[ART] [Jessica Jones] Jessica Jones by [tumblr.com profile] juubus
I don't follow enough artists to see more Jessica Jones fanart but I was super excited to find this. The colors are perfect and mirror the official art while still being their own thing. The movement is nice, too! Her hair (I am a sucker for great hair in art).

[ART] [Transistor] Sybil by [instagram.com profile] guweiz (Sybil Reisz)
Further to our Transistor review: art of Sybil! This looks a lot softer than the Sybil I remember from the game, but I kinda like the idea that this is Sybil before the game starts and it all goes to hell. The colours and shading contribute to it feeling soft (I really like them – they look like there's texture, and I'm always in favour of that), and I keep thinking that there's a few shades of red in Sybil's eyes like a hint of what's to come.

[FIC] [Ballet Shoes] With Love, Posy by [archiveofourown.org profile] deepdarkwaters (5,204 words) (Posy Fossil)
Posy's letters to her sisters after the end of the book! This fic really reminds me of Posy's sections of Ballet Shoes – she's inherently self-centred and a tiny bit arrogant, but with enough charm and skill to back it up. I feel like it really captures the sisters, even though we're only getting one side of the conversation, and the descriptions are really evocative. ... Now I kinda want to go back and read Ballet Shoes again.

[ART] [Hamilton] Hamilton cards Part One (Hearts), Part Two (Clubs), Part Three (Spades), Part Four (Diamonds) by [tumblr.com profile] birdloaf (Ensemble)
Someone drew beautiful stylised, textured-looking playing cards with the Hamilton leads on them, and I really really need them. *_* The poses and expressions are GREAT (Mulligan, Maria Reynolds, Jefferson, and Lafayette though!), the backgrounds are beautiful (Lafayette and Washington), and some of them (ELIZA) give me chills with their details and atmosphere. I especially love the way the symbols are incorporated into the designs! (... I want a deck of these so much!)
