Right! It's the problem of scarcity again, which I've struggled with for several years now when reading science fiction and fantasy. So few mainstream writers include queer characters that when they do show up they're inevitably caught in the trap of being part of such a small group that they have to represent All Queer Characters. The Fifth Season handled it better than some other books I've read, but it's still an issue that I'm not sure how to resolve until more mainstream writers make an effort to include queer characters across multiple intersections of identity. Because queer characters suffering will always weigh more heavily and authors who attempt to include them will be stuck between a rock and a hard place with how they portray their stories until we're better represented. It's tough. :(
