I have had this reaction to certain pieces of media that were lauded and garlanded with gushing praise by my entire (fannish, progressive, concerned with issues of representation) social circle. It's worse, because you feel as if you've been let down twice: once by the work, which is like a punch to the face, and once by your community, for failing to notice things in the work which hurt you.

I haven't read the book in question, but I'm so sorry that it was such a miserable experience for you.
