Yes, it was smart how she mixed the old and the new - I usually have so much trouble with stories that return to the old fate of a character but this one worked out so well (probably because it has a positive ending to work with).

I read The Penelopiad and found it a little dull (but the maids were written as a chorus that kept interjecting and I loved that). Here's Ana's review of it from a while back: http://www.thingsmeanalot.com/2007/05/penelopiad-by-margaret-atwood.html . I thought I'd reviewed it, but can't seem to find a post anywhere.

There's also a good book of Odyssey retellings called The Lost Books of the Odyssey that you might be interested in. There's more Odysseus than Penelope but I think there are a few stories about her.
