The great thing about Ilya is that although he's an important character Tess has so many other important relationships with other people, and is so RIGHTEOUSLY PISSED at the outset that I just decided to trust her and grudgingly forgive him as she did (although I hope she continues to give him hell). WE'LL SEE WHAT HAPPENS IN THE NEXT BOOK.
