Yes, this sounds like exactly my experience with some short fiction. I would probably spend more time bemused, but sometimes I feel like I almost understand something but then get angry at myself when I can't make it be clearer. And of course we're in a community of amazingly smart people so it feels like everyone groks everything I don't. But because short fiction doesn't have a review community, no one is posting about it going "well, I didn't get this at all..." because it feels frivolous to make an entire post for that. Maybe reviewing whole issues would make it feel more robust...

(Also, who out there thinks I should be paid for my reviews?! A) omg thanks and B) though I feel like I need to read more genre material before I could successfully make that attempt without expiring from excessive self-rejection...)

A short fiction discussion group could be a total positive! We need to find someone who has the spare time and organization skills to run one! I'd do it but I'm running in the negative on spare time. Maybe there's someone out there who could get one going?
