ladybusinessSidetracks is a collaborative project featuring various essays, videos, reviews, or other Internet content that we want to share with each other. All past and current links for the Sidetracks project can be found in our Sidetracks tag.
➝ These have made the rounds, and Jodie and I are both sharing them but I think they're great so have them twice because they're so incisive. Sarah Rees Brennan takes on the charge that her books are based on Supernatural and then she takes on sexism of a critique. Both things are very long, but they're so great.
➝ The Unrecognized Trajectory of Slow Burn Success by Janny Wurts was both enlightening but very depressing. :(
➝ The 2014 Hugo Awards: Thoughts on Award-Pimping is a very level, open look at the author eligibility for awards issue, although I continue to wish the community would pick a better word than "pimping". I don't think my mind is going to be changed: I see author eligibility lists as a pretty useful tool and like that authors are making them, especially authors in short fiction categories, but the wide range of perspectives is fascinating.

➝ How Many Men Have Female Role Models? (Also: 1 Quick Question to Screen Your Dates). I don't so much need the dating advice or think it particularly wise (punishing people for growing up in a culture doesn't seem like a good metric for measuring anything), the story shared here is very familiar to me. It's hard to have women as role models even as a girl in a culture that treats women with derision. I remember quite often wanting to run a business like my godmother but being told that was "inappropriate" or being made fun of because of it. Very sad.
➝ Lupita Nyong'o gave a wonderful speech about beauty. Ugh, I love her. I've gone on a bender recently in the wake of her Oscar win:
- Lupita on the Ellen show after the Oscars
- Lupita and Jennifer Lawrence making a mockery of the media's continual attempts to pit them against each other with bonus film I need Hollywood to make immediately
- She has great taste in video games

➝ Only a couple of links from me this week. First of all, Parents push to end gender division of boys' and girls' books. This was my regular reminder that I really ought to read Anne Fine. Someone who raised Cordelia Fine is unlikely to fail to be awesome, right?
➝ Secondly, The Ghibli Jam totally made my week :D
➝ And lastly, a piece from a few months ago that I think I missed at the time: Chvrches' Lauren Mayberry: 'I will not accept online misogyny'. I'm seeing them live next week, so I've been listening to them and reading stuff in preparation. She seems like such a smart and cool lady, and it's horrifying (though hardly surprising) to hear about the harassment she's experienced.

➝ I get the fun of telling you about our fantastic new Lady Business Tumblr project - The Friendship Zone:
The three female friends behind Lady Business post pictures, quotes and essays that prove that women like other women. We aim to challenge the widespread belief that women are all engaged in a perpetual cat fight by creating a space that gathers and shares a lot of instances that disprove it. We include both real and fictional examples of friendship, admiration and support between women; through these we hope to provide a reminder that there’s a ton of support for women out there and to push back against harmful narratives about how women interact.
We already have a lot of posts queued and are just too excited about this project.

➝ Jennifer Lynn Barnes followed up on Sarah Rees Brennan's recent post about being a published writer who used to write fanfic, and created "On Fandom, Parasocial Relationships, and what we don't know":
The stories we tell ourselves are just that—stories. They are, at best, guesses, and often, they’re not very good ones. We do not have special access to another person’s thoughts or emotions, no matter how much we’ve read about them. We do not “really know” them better than the people they are close to in real life. It is not in any way rational to think that, based on your familiarity with someone’s writing or twitter feed or something you were peripherally involved with ten years ago, you have superior knowledge of that person’s current mental states, emotions, personality, and moral proclivities than do people who currently hang out with that person on a daily basis.

Created out of a desire to see positive Asian representations in the media...'. Full list of web episodes is here. It looks fun and hopefully I'll find a spot in my media rotation to try it out.
