I wonder why that is. I suppose it has something to do with the entertainment/literature divide and the areas of contention between them. When should fiction be work? What do we mean by "work"? Is there a happy medium between these two areas of engagement? Apparently I mean "let the reader do all of the heavy lifting and struggle hopelessly up Mt. Narrative with no rope and/or provisions" while others are like "just pour it into my eyeballs completely raw, go!" Sigh.

Also, I also don't think that was her intention, but I kept getting stuck on the creepy mages and their creepy sexualization being front and center (for me). I think a lot of the things in the bolded section I took issue with were, and as I told Ana above, specifically not from a place of maliciousness, which I probably should have made clearer. I think it's sort of related to how, for example, people like me who often write fanfiction about dudes because we love those relationships and have fun writing them often inadvertently forget the rest of the world? Which is not inherently negative, until you put us together in a seething mass of girls writing about dudes and the rest of the world becomes invisible and seriously problematic.

Therefore, I didn't contextualize myself enough, and apologize! I took issue with some things in the context of fantasy as a whole, rather than this book. :) Clearly I should not have cut all of those 1500 words I did and made this even longer. :P

Also, comment any time. Here we are fine with people having different opinions and readings, because that helps enrich a text for everyone! \o/ (We will not be jerks, and we will not let anyone else be jerks to you for having a different opinion. I know it can be different elsewhere, but we try to cultivate a safe space for disagreement/debate.)
