Yes, I understand! Unfortunately I think you might run into the same problem we're having, because the book is really unclear about it (maybe on purpose). Billy thinks (and I agree), in a paragraph at the end:

I miss Dane, he thought. He was not sure of anything very concrete about Dane, not even in the fact that he missed him, exactly; but whenever he thought of it, Billy was very sad that what had happened to Dane had. He deserved better.
