It read exactly like a terrible love triangle to me and it's possible that the author didn't even mean it like that (and most other reviews I've read don't frame the relationship in that way, but it always felt like Ash had a choice). I've read nothing but praise for this book, to be honest, which makes me feel weird, like I read it wrong or similar, because I didn't hate it, I was just confused. What reviews did you read that were lackluster?
Oh, love triangles. I would be okay with them but so often they're full of angst but also sexism and really gross tropes if two of the parties in the triangle are girls. ALERT, ALERT, skeeve wire tripped, please hit emergency stop button. Also, I really really really dislike the constant siren blare YA romance with love triangles of YOU MUST PAIR UP PAIRS ONLY 1+1=2 IT'S THE ONLY RIGHT WAY POLY PEOPLE DON'T EXIST. We're just invisible and it's disappointing and such a narrow view when it comes to relationships -- that you must always choose, you can never have more than one person, which is just so false it hurts. :(
