I thought it was SO smart and such an unusual way to open a novel. There's this huge long speech, that is at its heart a big info drop of the details of the case. The genius thing is that she keeps you from really noticing that function of the speech and making you concentrate on how awfully biased the judge is. I was hooked before I even met any of the main characters, which seems really uncommon to me.
