Sidetracks - September 7, 2017

All past and current links for the Sidetracks project can be found in our Sidetracks tag. For more links and commentary you can follow us on Twitter, Tumblr. You can also support us on Patreon.

1. Patty Jenkins responds to James Cameron's idea that Wonder Woman sexualised its heroine. One very classy comeback. (By the way the digital release of Wonder Woman is now available.)

2. Gina Torres is getting a Suits spinoff which means I will now finally try to watch Suits.

3. The Captain Marvel movie has changed screenwriters. I worry so much about this movie.

4. Liz Bourke makes J. Y. Yang's Tensorate novellas sound pretty great in the latest installment of her Sleeps With Monsters column — Flying Beasts and Complicated, Amazing Worldbuilding.

5. Terry Pratchett's estate manager upheld his wish that his unfinished work be pulped under a steamroller. I am a huge Pratchett fan & while I would have treasured any new work that came out from the Pratchett estate I am very glad this came to pass for many reasons.

6. Libba Bray talks about her experience with Hollywood's Woman Problem in light of the decision to make an all-female Lord of the Flies reboot.

7. A couple of years ago, professor and media critic Lyra Montiero wrote a (thoughtful and well-argued, in my opinion) critique of Hamilton that got a lot of attention. On the two-year anniversary of Hamilton's Broadway premiere, she returns to her critique with an excellent essay on loving problematic things, with Lawrence of Arabia as her other touchstone. I always appreciate a good reminder that so often we critique things because we love them, not because we want to tear them down.

8. Annalee Newitz says that "Game of Thrones Has Become a CW Show" and largely credits the drastic change in how the episodes are paced. I agree with her that this is not entirely a bad thing, but it's also jarring. Many many Season 7 spoilers.

9. Normally I am not a big fan of creators going after transformative works, but the man who created Pepe the Frog is suing white supremecists who are attempting to profit off the character, and this I can get behind. Especially when he forces an Islamophobe to donate all the earnings from an anti-Muslim children's book to the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

10. When white actor Ed Skrien dropped out of the upcoming Hellboy movie because his character in the comics was Asian, one of his biggest cheerleaders was Chinese-American actress Chloe Bennet (of Agents of SHIELD). When a few people then tried to discredit her opinion because she uses a non-
Chinese stage name, she owned them appropriately.

11. The Book Smugglers have a Kickstarter! You can support their work of creating new opportunities in the field with diverse voices.

12. In a sign that I am an Adult, I was very into this article about how house flippers triggered the mortgage crisis and not dumb poor people.

13. The Charlottesville Syllabus is useful for anyone who wants to understand the history of the area. I learned a lot in the pieces I read.

14. We Need to Talk About Digital Blackface in Reaction GIFs was really good food for thought and made me seriously consider how I use gifs featuring black talent.

15. I asked people to name the three books they wanted to see adapted for TV/film, and they sure did tell me. So many book recs! So many potential great shows and movies!

16. Max Gladstone interviews Sarah Gailey about her novella, River of Teeth.

17. White people…why did you do this?

18. Rachel reviewed several books, including All Systems Red by Martha Wells. Another member of #TeamMurderBot

19. Claire review a recent spate of graphic novels she's read, including some we both liked (and also some she didn't like and I did). She also talks about the problem with Marvel comics and crossover events. I'm still annoyed by the Secret Wars timeskip, too.

20. John Green reads the first chapter of Turtles All the Way Down. I admit I am pretty excited about this book, because Green and I suffer from similar types of mental illness, and this book is probably going to be Too Real.

21. Bridget pointed out a trailer for a film called Women Who Kill and it looks excellent.

22. Watch this great video of adorable owls.

23. Hark A Vagrant's "Nemesis" comic is pretty much a summary of 50-75% of my ships.

24. How to decorate galaxy cookies with royal icing! — This is INCREDIBLY SOOTHING and the results are very pretty! I bet they took forever though.

25. This post on cultural appropriation in videogame music is quite detailed (and sometimes bleak)! It breaks down a few pieces of music as examples as well, if that is something that you'd enjoy.
